We are pleased to announce the placement of "Astrographic Blue" (2019–24) by Vija Celmins into an esteemed institutional collection.
Produced over a period of five years in oil on linen, "Astrographic Blue" exemplifies the sustained, exacting practice for which Celmins (born 1938) is recognized as one of the most singular figures in contemporary art. Departing from photographic source images of celestial phenomena, Celmins builds surfaces of extraordinary density and material presence through the patient accumulation of minute marks, each applied in deliberate sequence across the support. The title's reference to astrography, the photographic mapping of stars, signals both the subject and the method: the meticulous charting of a field that is, by its nature, infinite and unarticulated.
Celmins's night-sky paintings resist narrative and symbolic reading in favor of the purely phenomenological: they ask the viewer to attend to the surface as surface, and to the act of looking as itself a form of investigation. Each work is an extended act of attention, on the part of the artist across years of making, and on the part of the viewer encountering the finished surface. The present work served as the cover image of the catalogue published in conjunction with the major retrospective at Fondation Beyeler, Basel, in the summer of 2025 — the most comprehensive presentation of her work to date in Europe, and the occasion that confirmed her pre-eminence in the international contemporary canon.
Works acquired directly from the artist of this significance are extremely rarely available. We are honored to have placed this defining statement of Celmins's exacting practice into a collection of commensurate seriousness and depth.
